City opens Australia’s largest pump track

The Gold Coast’s first asphalt pump track has opened at Pizzey Park today, becoming the largest in Australia. The $1.7 million project covers a total area of 5500m 2 with asphalt riding surfaces covering 2000m 2 , landscaping, seating and spectator areas. The Pizzey Park Pump Track has been created for BMX and scooter riders, incorporating rollers, double jumps, berms and wall rides. It is now the largest pump track in the country surpassing the Gladstone Pump Track, which is 5000m 2 . It is a welcomed addition to Pizzey Park’s existing world-class skate park which underwent a major extension in May 2022. “Pizzey Park is our city’s prime destination for sports covering 60 hectares with world-class skate and BMX facilities, plus 25 sporting clubs, an aquatic centre, our largest rugby league club and Queensland’s largest tennis facility,” said Councillor Nick Marshall. “The pump track is a fantastic addition to Pizzey Park and will create another training ground for future BMX and skateboarding champions to prepare for the Brisbane Olympics. “Since the Pizzey Park Skate Park extension was completed, it has been incredibly busy with thousands of locals making the most of the world-class facility. We expect the same for the pump track,” Cr Marshall added. The new pump track has a unique design with 50 jumps and three wall rides combining with rollers and berms. Instead of pedalling, riders progress through the course by sustaining momentum by 'pumping' the rises and falls of the track, with highly skilled riders able to sustain momentum indefinitely. The track design will allow for skill progression, allowing future generations to learn, gain confidence and continue developing up

Are you sitting on your free test kit? If you have an unused bowel screening home test kit sitting around at home, you are not alone. In fact, fewer than 4 in 10 people who receive the free test in the mail from the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program are doing it and sending it on for testing. Why is it important to do the test? Bowel Cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia - around 400 Gold Coast residents are diagnosed each year. It is also one of the most treatable cancers if it is found early. Bowel cancers found through screening are usually less advanced and are more treatable than cancers found at a later stage, often after symptoms appear. How does the test work? The bowel screening test looks for tiny, trace amounts of blood in a person’s poo, which may be a sign of changes in the bowel. If blood is found in either of the test samples, the next step is usually a diagnostic test, such as a colonoscopy, to check the bowel for any abnormalities. Most people who have blood detected in their samples will not have bowel cancer, but many will have small growths in their bowel called polyps. If polyps are found during a colonoscopy they are usually removed, which prevents them from potentially turning into a cancer at a later stage. Are the tests suitable for everyone? Bowel screening tests are intended for healthy people who have no obvious symptoms (such as bleeding from the bowel, persistent changes in toilet habits, unexplained tiredness or weight loss and abdominal pain). Anyone with bowel symptoms should discuss them with their doctor as soon as possible and not wait for a screening test. How do I get a bowel screening test? The home test kits are automatically mailed to eligible people aged 50-74. They are sent to the postal address registered with Medicare or DVA, so it’s important to keep this address up to date. The tests do have a shelf life, and an expiry date can be found on the back of the kit. If a test has expired, was thrown away, is damaged or never arrived, a free replacement test can be requested online or by phoning 1800 627 701. Bowel cancer screening does the heavy lifting for Tony

For most people, the weekends fly by too fast. But for 60-year-old Currumbin former crane operator Tony McCormack and wife Tanya, one February weekend last year could not have dragged any slower.

Tony had just been diagnosed with bowel cancer, after completing a free bowel screening test that was sent to him in the mail. “I had a gut feeling for a little while that something wasn’t right with Tony, but I couldn’t put my finger on it,” Tanya said. “For years I tried to get him to do the bowel cancer screening test that gets mailed to everyone over 50, and he just wouldn’t. But when a kit arrived on his 58th birthday I said ‘Right, Happy Birthday. You’re doing it’,” she said. This not-so-subtle shove from his bride of 20 years could well have saved Tony’s life. “After the test detected blood in my faeces, I went to my GP who referred me to a colorectal surgeon who performed a colonoscopy at Tugun’s John Flynn Hospital,” Tony said. “It revealed bowel cancer at the base of the colon. And as it always seems to be with these things, the diagnosis was delivered on a Friday afternoon and we had to wait until Monday to learn what was next, so there wasn’t much small talk at home that weekend. We were numb and just trying to absorb it all,” he said. Thankfully for the couple, things were about to start moving quickly in the right direction. “Nine months of intensive chemotherapy and radiation started in March last year, pretty well straight after the colonoscopy,” Tony said. “Every fortnight on a Monday the chemo went all day, which gave me plenty of time to think about what would have happened if I had skipped the bowel screening again. The early detection gave the doctors the chance to stop it in its tracks without surgery and today I’m clinically clear and improving all the time,” he said. Tony has also discovered a few things about himself that seem at odds with his knockabout persona. “I’ve discovered my own mortality and I have empathy these days, something I never really had before. I always thought if blokes said they were sick, they were bunging it on, and I didn’t empathise at all with them; it’s just the way I was brought up. The whole experience has brought about a massive change of mindset and recognition of the importance of a support network around me. The chemotherapy and radiation did its job, but it has been the support of Tanya and my two teenage boys, my friends down at my old gym and my former workmates; that has really helped me enormously,” he said. Tony has a simple message for anyone who is sent a bowel test in the mail. “My advice is do the test and if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for your family; it literally takes five minutes and it’s free, so why wouldn’t you? “And if you get the same sort of letter back that I did, it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world, because it wasn’t for me,” he said. According to the Cancer Council, bowel cancer is one of the most common cancers in Australia and the second highest cause of cancer death. Each year around 400 Gold Coast residents are diagnosed with the disease. If found early, almost all bowel cancers can be successfully treated, yet current national screening participation rates are sitting at about 40 per cent. Have Your Say on Recycling and Energy Precinct Community engagement will begin this week on a proposed recycling and energy precinct in the city’s north which will divert up to 97% of waste from landfill. Mayor Tom Tate said it was vital we reduced our reliance on landfill and estimated that capacity would be reached at current facilities within 10 years with no suitable new landfill sites identified. He said the proposed Advanced Resource Recovery Centre (ARRC) for Stapylton was an 8-pronged approach to increase recycling and used residual waste to generate energy. “A pre-feasibilty report found that this proposal not only offered economic and environmental benefits but would also divert up to 97% of waste from landfill,” Mayor Tate said. “Landfill is outdated and there are innovative, more advanced options available to us that are better for our environment and for ratepayers,” Mayor Tate said. “We can create a world-class sustainability hub here and create a future where recycling and green energy production dominate our waste management. “It will also reduce the City’s cost to manage waste over the next 30 years in the order of $1.8 billion.” The ARRC will consist of: • A new recycling facility. New technology will reduce contamination and increase material able to be recycled. • A construction and demolition waste recycling facility to recycle construction materials into reusable commodity streams such as metals, concrete, asphalt, timber, and soils. • An organics processing facility that will produce compost and mulch. • A residual waste to energy facility in which waste that cannot be recycled or reused will be used as a fuel to create steam that is then used to generate electricity. The facility will generate enough electricity to offset 100% of the City’s operational costs.

• A new sewage treatment plant (STP) to service the Stapylton area. Currently the City has a contract with Logan City to use their Beenleigh STP. • A recycled water treatment plant (RWTP) to produce Class A recycled water for non-residential use like agriculture and industrial. All ARRC facilities will also use the water for operations. • A green hydrogen electrolysis facility that will convert water from the WTP into hydrogen which will be used to fuel the City’s waste collection and transportation fleet. • A community education centre to provide information and resources to schools and the public, as well as support training, research, and employment opportunities. The ARRC will be located in Stapylton, on existing City owned land adjacent to the existing landfill. It is expected the precinct will attract interest from sustainability and manufacturing industries, creating jobs and business opportunities. The project is currently in the feasibility phase with the City progressing through the regulatory approvals process. Community consultation is underway, with targeted information being sent to residents in northern suburbs and members of the public can expect to see information stalls at various community markets and events in coming months. Feedback can also be provided via the City’s website. www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au

Celebrating 20 years: The Doyles Art Award and Exhibition

Celebrating its landmark 20th annual event, The Doyles Art Award and Exhibition is back for 2024, offering people the perfect opportunity to own original art. Running from 27 June to 7 July and featuring over 400 artworks on display with a prize pool of $30,000 across several categories, The Doyles is considered a significant award in the art calendar and event in the community.

Event Director Sam Sinner says the annual exhibition has become an iconic event on Australia’s art and culture calendar, providing art enthusiasts and the local community to discover original art from new and established artists. “The Doyles creates a remarkable and limited occasion for people to directly connect with talented artists and acquire original artworks that are truly captivating,” says Ms Sinner. “Visiting the exhibition is not only a chance to appreciate the incredible creativity on display, but also a unique opportunity to support artists and bring home a piece of art that holds personal meaning and beauty.” Named after famous Australian artist d’Arcy William Doyle, the prestigious award is the Gold Coast’s longest running painting prize and carries a prize pool of $30,000 across its three competition categories – Landscape, Figurative and Still Life. With the exhibition running from 27 June to 7 July, Ms Sinner says over 400 artworks are expected to be on display come opening night. “The Doyles Art Award offers a unique opportunity for artists residing in Australia to showcase their work, gain recognition for their talent and engage with a broader audience,” says Ms Sinner. “The organising team behind the event has established an outstanding reputation for promoting new and emerging artists and last year we

delivered over $70,000 back into the arts community through prizes and sales. “Winners have found it to be a valuable stepping stone in their careers, with several artists being represented in galleries as a result of their exposure through The Doyles.

The tribal rock musical The tribal rock musical follows a young group of hippies fighting the establishment, dodging the drafts, getting high, living and loving in New York City. In the world around them, the Vietnam War is raging, and the Age of Aquarius is dawning. “We also offer the opportunity for collectors of fine art to purchase artworks from local and national artists across the duration of the exhibition.”

Originally established in 2004 by dedicated volunteers, The Doyles Art Award is held in Firth Park Community Centre, Somerset Drive in Mudgeeraba and runs from 27 June to 7 July 2024. The judging panel will include HOTA Director of Gallery and Visual Arts Susi Muddiman OAM, Director of SWELL Sculpture Festival Natasha Edwards and professional artist Hobie Porter. The Doyles Art Award has attracted a number of high-caliber sponsors which have been instrumental in the increase in prize money including Bond University, Attwood Marshall Lawyers, SkyRidge Living, Left Bank Art Group, Wings Real Estate, A Gentle Touch Funerals and The Hive Art Gallery. Immediate call for Blood and Plasma Donors as Lifeblood reserves dip to critical levels Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has issued an immediate call for donors as their reserves of most blood types drop to critical levels. Without a significant boost in people donating, Lifeblood says its supplies will soon be at their lowest level this year. The current demand for blood and plasma is extremely high and the current level of donations is struggling to keep up with this high demand. Whilst some stock is also held in hospitals, Lifeblood says it needs over 1,000 Queenslanders to donate in the coming week to meet the needs of patients. Blood and plasma are required to treat a number of life threatening conditions and their use continues to grow each year. This is driving the very high demand for both blood and plasma and there are no signs of this changing. Lifeblood Executive Director of Donor Experience, Cath Stone has urged both new donors and those who haven’t donated for some time to donate now. “Right now, we need both blood and plasma donors; we have empty chairs across our network every single day,” she said. “Almost 4,000 bags of blood are needed by hospitals every day across Australia to help patients in times of trauma, major surgery, cancer treatment, pregnancy and for a range of other medical conditions,” Ms Stone said. Just one donation could save up to three lives. “With one in three of us needing donated blood in our lifetime, the life you save could be that of a friend or family member, so please don’t wait, book now.” “Fewer than 3 per cent of the population donate blood regularly, yet more than 58 per cent are eligible to donate. That means there are about 10 million more people who could donate today, but don’t,” she said. Ms Stone said it was likely there would be ongoing appeals for blood this winter. Lifeblood wants blood donation to become a habit for many more Australians, and not just something people do when there is an urgent need. “If you’ve been waiting for the right time to become a donor or have been thinking about coming back to donate, this is the time to act,” she said. Ms Stone also encouraged people not to rule themselves out, as many potential donors incorrectly believe they are ineligible. “If you’re unsure, you can jump on the Lifeblood website and take the eligibility quiz. And if you don’t know your blood type, please make an appointment, as people of all blood types are needed right now,” she said. To book an appointment call 13 14 95, book online at lifeblood.com.au

Freezer Dump Bags for Easy Winter Meals

Freezer dump bags are pre-prepared meal kits designed for convenient storage and quick cooking. These bags contain all the ingredients needed for a meal, often including chopped vegetables, proteins, sauces, and seasonings. The idea is to prepare the ingredients in advance, store them in a freezer-safe bag, and then freeze them. When you're ready to cook, you simply "dump" the contents of the bag into a slow cooker, Instant Pot, or directly into a pot or pan on the stove. Here are some key points about freezer dump bags: Convenience : They save time on busy days since all the prep work is done in advance. Meal Planning : They help with meal planning and portion control, making it easier to stick to a healthy eating plan. Reduction of Food Waste : By preparing and freezing meals, you can extend the shelf life of ingredients and reduce food waste. Variety : You can prepare a variety of meals in advance, giving you options without the daily hassle of deciding what to cook. Storage : They are typically stored in freezer-safe bags, which are labeled with the meal name, date, and cooking instructions. Preparation Tips: • Use high-quality, freezer-safe bags to prevent freezer burn. • Label bags clearly with the meal name, date, and cooking instructions. • Remove as much air as possible from the bags before sealing to preserve freshness. • Organise your freezer to ensure the bags are easily accessible.
